New Paltz, college town, and Gateway to the Gunks. First stop when you leave the Thruway at Exit 18. On the skyline straight ahead, the Mohonk tower.

A castle in the sky. This is the back of the famous Mohonk Mountain House just to the West of New Paltz. The front towers grandly over a crystalline mountain lake.

Rosendale once made its money from digging up and burning cement and entertaining canal-barge-men at the town's 32 bars. Still grittily-Victorian, it's starting to spruce itself up to welcome visitors.

8. Hurley, "New Town" in 1677
Slightly to one site of the Scenic Byway but not to be missed, Hurley, or "New Town" as it was called when founded just 11 years after the Great Fire of London. Both sides of the street are lined with stone houses.
